How the body typically changes
- In the first year, babies learn to focus their vision, reach out and explore the things around them, and they begin to form bonds of love and trust with their parents and others. Source
- From birth to age 5, children reach developmental milestones in how they play, learn, speak, act and move, such as smiling for the first time, taking a first step and waving goodbye. Source
- Developmental milestones are skills most children (75% or more) can do by a certain age. By 1 year of age, most babies can pull up to stand, walk while holding on to furniture, wave goodbye and pick up small things between thumb and finger. Source
- Most babies start teething at around 6 months, though some start before 4 months and others after 12 months. Most children have all their milk teeth by the time they are 2 to 3 years old. Source
- It is normal for babies to lose some weight in the first few days after birth. Most are back at or above their birth weight by 3 weeks, and weight usually goes up fastest in the first 6 months. Source
Main health risks
- SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome), the sudden unexplained death of an apparently healthy baby, is most likely in the first 6 months but can happen up to 12 months. Safer-sleep guidance: babies sleep on their back on a firm, flat mattress clear of pillows and soft toys, in their own cot in a parent's room for at least the first 6 months, away from smoke and not too hot. Source
- Honey given to babies younger than 12 months can cause botulism, a severe food poisoning, so guidance advises not giving honey before that age, including adding it to food or drinks. Source
- Worldwide, drowning rates are highest among children aged 4 and under, and drowning is one of the leading causes of death for children aged 1 to 14. The risk rises when children are around water without active adult supervision. Source
- Whole nuts can make young children choke, and NHS guidance advises not giving them to children under 5 years old. (England, UK) Source

- Recommended sleep for newborns up to 3 months old is 14 to 17 hours a day. Source
- Recommended sleep for babies aged 4 to 12 months is 12 to 16 hours a day, including naps. Source
- WHO guidelines advise that babies under 1 year be physically active several times a day, especially through floor-based play, including at least 30 minutes of tummy time spread through the day for those not yet moving around. They advise against screen time and against restraining babies for more than 1 hour at a time. Source
- WHO and UNICEF recommend starting breastfeeding within 1 hour of birth, giving only breast milk for the first 6 months, and then continuing breastfeeding up to 2 years or beyond while safe, nutritious solid foods are added from 6 months. Source
- Whole cow's milk can be introduced at 12 months, but not before: earlier, it may raise the risk of intestinal bleeding, has too much protein and minerals for a baby's kidneys and lacks some nutrients babies need. Source

Fair skin types
USPSTF (US) guidance says people with fair skin types (pale skin, light hair and eye colour, freckles, or skin that sunburns easily) are at higher risk of skin cancer. It recommends counselling people aged 6 months to 24 years, and parents of young children, about limiting exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and selectively offering this counselling to adults older than 24.

Born in, or with parents from, a region where hepatitis B is more common
CDC (US) guidelines list people born in regions where hepatitis B infection prevalence is 2% or more among those at increased risk, and recommend testing them, regardless of age, if they may have been susceptible to infection. The same applies to people born in the United States who were not vaccinated as infants and whose parents were born in regions where prevalence is 8% or more.

When to see a doctor
- NHS guidance lists signs that a baby or child under 5 years old needs emergency care, including difficulty breathing; blue, grey, pale or blotchy skin, lips or tongue; a rash that does not fade when pressed; being very hard to wake; a seizure; or no pee in the past 12 hours. If a child has any of these signs, call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away. Source
- NHS guidance lists a temperature of 38°C or higher in a baby under 3 months, or 39°C or higher in a baby aged 3 to 6 months, among the signs that need emergency help: call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away. (England, UK) Source
- NHS guidance says a temperature of 38°C or higher for more than 5 days in a child aged 3 months to 5 years may be a sign of serious illness. Contact a doctor or local health service; in an emergency, call your local emergency number. (England, UK) Source
- Children under 5 years old have a higher risk of dehydration. A sunken soft spot on a baby's head, few or no tears when crying, fewer wet nappies or a child seeming drowsy can be signs of serious dehydration that NHS guidance says need urgent advice. Contact a doctor or local health service; in an emergency, call your local emergency number. Source
- If a young child is missing milestones for their age, or there are concerns about their development, CDC guidance is to talk with the child's doctor, share the concerns and ask about developmental screening rather than wait. Source
If you are worried about a symptom, contact a doctor or your local health service. In an emergency, call the emergency number for your country.
